Gotta Catch Them All

We love them, we catch them and we collect them. Yes, that’s right, I am talking about Pokémon Go. The app that has generated not just thousands, but millions of downloads within seconds upon its arrival in the app store. With all the problems millenniums face, and by problems, I mean notifications/texts on our phones.  It is my shame to say, that I am guilty of fleeing a scene in hopes of catching a nearby Pokémon when the notification on my phone goes off telling me that Bulbasaur is nearby.  Unlike many of the games out there, Pokémon Go is a real world interactive game. It allows users to get up and on their feet, and actually move around while they try to hunt for the beloved Pokémon. I have seen many people, as well as met people randomly playing this game. In a way, Pokémon Go is bringing people together, whether consciously or by sheer luck.

Pokémon Go appeals to our generation because we grew up with them. We collected the cards and participated in battles, we watched it every Saturday morning on TV, and drug our parents to the movies to see the Pokemon: The First Movie, where a new poke was born- Mewtwo . 

Pokémon Go allows our inner child to fly. According to an article by Eleanor Roy, A man by the name of Tom Currie, quite his job to become a full time Pokémon hunter. Tom Currie spent two months traveling to try and catch all the Pokémon.  Talk about priorities.  While Pokémon Go is fun and exciting there are a few dangers that come along with the game. For example, a girl was reported falling into a pond while playing, some people are even filing trespassing charges for players entering their property, although very few charges have been made. There was even a dead body reported after a player unknowingly stumbled upon it while playing.

Here on the Avila Campus, we have a few pokestops of our our own as well as a place to battle. So download the app, get out of the dorms and go hunting.  You will find the game enjoyable as well as an opportunity to meet new people.

We Deserve Better

The cafeteria. The place we go to feed our minds and give our bodies the energy it needs to sustain ourselves throughout the day. In cafeteria you can find a salad bar one of the only areas that actually serves something healthy. The cafeteria also has a hamburger bar where they usually serve hamburger patties, turkey burgers, chicken patties and fries. There is another line that usually serves some kind of “gourmet” meat which changes daily.

Although it is nice to have a readily available meal served at the cafeteria. It is a little surprising that Avila University serves food high in cholesterol, fat and calories. Obesity is a growing concern in America and for what each student/ athlete pays there should at least be some healthier food choices or at least change the ingredients that they use to cook the food.

The majority of students are athletes and the food that the cafeteria serves is not conducive to having a healthy diet, therefore resulting in poor performance.

The cafeteria has recently been putting the caloric content of the food that they are serving that day up. They also put the sugar content of the drinks that they cafeteria has on a poster board with bags of sugar displayed on it.

According to a secret source there have been rumors of the cafeteria considering serving smoothies to athletes at meals, and I am almost quite certain that they would not limit it to such.

Testing the Balance

In 1986 Antonin Scalia was appointed into the U.S. Supreme Court as a Justice by Ronald Reagan. The Supreme Court is the highest Judicial body in the United States. The supreme court is the final judge in all cases involving laws of congress and the constitution. The power is limited by two branches of government: the democrats and the republicans.

It is sad to say that Justice Scalia was found dead on a Saturday in February at a resort in West Texas, the cause of death is believed to be natural. He was 79 years old.

The topic of who will replace the Justice is a big discussion in the presidential debate campaigns. There is a lot of controversy over who will appoint the new Justice. Republicans in the presidential debate say they should wait until a new president is appointed to determine the replacement of Justice Scalia but Obama and the Democrats argue the opposite and say that they need to appoint a new one now.  President Obama states that he plans to “fulfill my constitutional responsibilities to nominate a successor in due time. There will be plenty of time for me to do so, and for the Senate to fulfill its responsibilities to give that person a fair hearing and a timely vote.”

Justice Scalia’s death sways the balance of the courts. The democrats had four appointees that were liberals and the republicans had five appointees that were conservative. Since Scalia’s death the courts are now evenly divided making any decision locked until a new successor is appointed.

According to Los Angeles Times one issue they are currently stuck on is an abortion case in Texas.  The courts were supposed to come together and decide whether states can adopt medical regulations that shut down most or all abortion clinics. Both the democrats and republicans saw this case as crucial. But without Justice Scalia there is not a majority to rule on the matter.  This is just one of many issues that Justice Scalia left behind in his death.

Scalia, was considered to be one of the more prominent legal thinkers of his generation. He was characterized as the author of the court’s conservative majority. Whoever is appointed the new Justice can cause some major changes in political parties affecting laws and decisions that are of controversy.
